Introduction :
Nepal is an underdeveloped country suffering from many socio-economic problems due to many years’ political instability in the nation. Therefore the country lacks the resources to provide social protection to its citizens. Women, children and other marginalized groups have to face a lot of social and economic difficulties in their lives. Thousands of children live in the streets of Kathmandu City. Innumerable children work as child laborers and millions of them are deprived of education and health care. Besides this, a large number of children have been found in Nepalese prisons where they are frustrating their lives without their basic requirements.
As a jail sentence, when a father or mother is put into prison their children have to face a lot of social problems. The family suffers from financial crisis when the earning member of the family is imprisoned. In a number of cases, the other parent marries another man or woman leaving their children alone, which compels them to become street children. In some cases, when there is no one to take care of a child whose parents are imprisoned, the dependent child is put in prison along with his/her parent. A lot of children under this category have been spending their pathetic lives in prisons though they are innocent and have not committed any crimes. In this way they have been deprived of their child rights. It is impossible for them to enjoy their rights such as to a safe environment, education and healthcare. Children in prison are at risk of emotional and physical abuse.
Besides the children from prison, there are other numbers of children lose their parents in early age by poor health condition, natural disaster like landslide, fluid, road accident, suicide and other many reason. In this situation the state has no any policy and plan to rescue those children and to provide then home and education. By this situation they are forced to go to the street and became beggar, pick pocketing and smuggling.
By studying these situations we (a team of young tourism sector workers) decided to establish an organization to work for such children and provide them with an alternative to staying in prison with their parents. In May 2005, NAMASTE CHILDREN NEPAL was registered under the government of Nepal as an NGO. We rescue those children who need a real assistance. We accept those children in the recommendation of prison administration, village authority, police, social organization and our direct supervision. We always follow the criteria of the rules and regulation of Social Welfare Council and Child Welfare Centre and co-ordinate with our donor organization.
